Oban Airburst Burgundy Driver Shaft Review

The Airburst Burgundy is the second shaft made by Olympic for Oban. Olympic is a premium Japanese fishing rod company. They specialize is fishing rods which are much like golf shafts, hollow carbon fiber tubes. The Olympic website has an in-depth discussion of carbon fiber properties of tubes. If you have never seen the manufacturing of a graphite golf shaft I recommend you watch this video about fishing rod construction. From 0:56 to 5:30 you are watching the process of the making of a graphite golf shaft. Graphite shafts are with few exceptions hand rolled. No one in the golf shaft business will publish a video about the manufacturing process they use. This is how it is done:

Ralph Reichert, owner of Oban Golf shafts discusses the making and technology of the Airburst golf shafts in this video from my my YouTube Channel, Devoted Golfer, We shot this discussion at the January 2019 PGA show.

Lets take a look at the second Airburst golf shaft from Oban.

Mitsubishi Diamana TB Series Driver Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Highlands Performance Golf Center, Carrollton Texas
Golf Digest Certified America’s 100 Best Club Fitter

The venerable Diamana Blue Board is now in its 5th generation, The 2021 Diamana TB series. Rather the reading me talk about what is new, just watch this video from Mitsubishi Chemical.

The Diamana Blue defines the most popular shaft archetype, a soft mid profile. This archetype is available from virtually every driver shaft company. Many brands produce exact copies and many other produce variations of the archetype. The EI profiles of the Diamana TB Series are not much different than the 4th generation BF series. What is noticeably different are manufacturing tolerances. Mitsubishi Chemical is vertically integrated. They make their own fiber, resin and prepreg. That gives them full control over design and manufacturing. The TB series is available in 21 versions from 40 to 80 grams and in flex designations from R2 to TX. I validated what they claim, there is very little variance in Butt diameter and balance through the matrix of shafts. That makes life easy for the fitting technician.

The HZRDUS Smoke Black RDX is on of two shafts released in 2021 using Hexcel HexTow carbon fiber. Hexcel is a producer of aerospace grade carbon fiber used in aircraft. I reviewed the HZRDUS Smoke Blue RDX last month. The Black is a firmer midsection compliment to the super soft mid Blue RDX.

Most Shaft companies send in review samples. Korea Hidden Technology never replied to the request for review samples. A great many golf fitters have professional subscriptions to my software and were interested in seeing the profile of the autoFlex shafts. One of them provided a shaft to be added to the database. The profile is no longer hidden.

LAGolf TRONO Driver Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Highlands Performance Golf Center, Carrollton Texas
Golf Digest Certified America’s 100 Best Club Fitter

LAGolf Shafts is taking a new approach to the golf shaft business. Professional Golf playing partners participate in the design of their golf shafts. The LAGolf TRONO shaft is the first such shaft designed by Bryson DeChambeau and the LAGolf engineering team. it is unique as is Bryson DeChambeau. LAGolf is committed to being a different shaft company. The shafts will be designed in with playing partners and made in the USA. Many shafts today are made in offshore “foundries” that produce shafts for many brands. That probably accounts for much of the similarity I see in shafts across brands. Very few shafts are made in the USA. The shaft matching page of my software did not find a single match for the LAGolf Shafts TRONO.

The Trono is produced on a 16 sided mandrel. That is what the 16 on the label of the shaft indicates. Some might remember the unique Matrix HD shafts. Let’s look at this very unique golf shaft.

Mitsubishi Tensei Pro White 1K Driver Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Highlands Performance Golf Center, Carrollton Texas
Golf Digest Certified America’s 100 Best Club Fitter

The woven Kevlar® material use by Mitsubishi Tensei Pro driver shafts have been available since 2016. They feature a Carbon Fiber/DuPont™ Kevlar® (CK) weave in the butt-section of the shaft. I have seen many shafts over the years with a woven material placed in the butt of shafts. This is as an indication that shaft manufactures recognize the thin walls near the but of the shaft deform and oval under load. The ovaling of the shaft in this area can contribute to shot dispersion. The woven Kevlar® material use by Mitsubishi is the only material I have measured to date where I can see a measurable effect. Hoop deformation significantly dips in this section of the shaft. Reduced hoop deformation in the 1K weave is the same as the CK weave. Mitsubishi tells us the 1K material transmits more feel.

Hoop deformation has a significant effect on the EI profile of the golf shaft.  Hoop deformation is manifested in the thin wall, butt section of the shaft. Mitsubishi engineering integrated the woven material hoop rigidity into the Tensei Pro designs, preserving the archetypical White, Blue and Red Board profiles of the Diamana family.

The Aldila Rogue driver shafts have now all been reissued with 130 MSI prepreg. The Aldila website informs us that Mitsubishi Chemical fiber and prepreg is used exclusively in the shaft. Mitsubishi acquired Aldila several years ago. Aldila and Mitsubishi are one of the few brands, perhaps the only brand, in the business to produce the materials their shafts are made with. Lets look at the rogue Black EI profile and then compare it to the Rogue White and Silver.

ACCRA Tour Z RPG HBP & LBP Driver Shafts Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker

High Balance and Low Balance designs compliment the ACCRA Tour Z shaft, released in 2017. High modulus. low resin prepreg results in low wall thickness, enhancing feedback. Uniform taper provides maximum energy transfer down the shaft. A woven prepreg from Toray runs down the length of the shaft, resulting in a uniform torque profile down the shaft. ACCRA tells us this creates the lowest resin to fiber ratio of any shaft they have ever designed. The shafts are made in a Japanese and the quality and conformity across weights and flex designations is as good as I have seen. Lets explore the EI Profile flex distribution of these shafts and look at how the movement of balance point changes a shaft.

Graphite Design Tour AD UB Driver Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Highlands Performance Golf Center, Carrollton Texas
Golf Digest Certified America’s 100 Best Club Fitter

The Graphite Design Tour AD UB is the second shaft from Graphite Design to use Torayca ® M40X pre-preg. Torayca ® M40X has both high strength and does not deform when loaded. Tensile Modulus is the mechanical property the relates force to deformation. The material in the UB does not elongate when loaded. In a golf shaft, the energy applied is not lost to elongation. It is stored in the shaft and theoretically is released at impact resulting in higher ball speeds.

The TrueTemper Evenflow Riptide LX is the second of two Riptide X series driver shafts released in late 2021.They contain ultra low modulus prepreg in the tip section. Both the LX and the MX have lower torque that earlier Riptide models which starts in the tip and continues up the shaft. The True Temper VRTX is a Performance Fitting Center Exclusive Product. In 2019 True Sports, the parent company of True Temper acquired the Ontario based PGMC group which included the Accra brand of golf shafts. PGMC is a distribution company that services the golf club building and fitting community. This acquisition gave True Sports a first class organization to handle sales, service and training for its golf products which include the True Temper and Project X brands. PGMC also handles other True Sports acquisitions, ACCRA, AeroTech and Grafalloy.  I graduated from the Performance Fitting Center adding it to the 9 other certifications I can recall.

The Project X VRTX driver shafts are sold only to PFC club builder / fitters. The VRTX Red is available in 40 to 60 gram models. The VRTX is available in the more traditional 50 to 70 gram range.

OBAN ISAWA GLD Golf Driver Shaft Review

By Russ Ryden, Fit2Score, A Dallas Fort Worth Club Fitter & Club Maker
The Highlands Performance Golf Center, Carrollton Texas
Golf Digest Certified America’s 100 Best Club Fitter

The Oban Isawa GLD is one of many 2022 products I will be reviewing in the coming month. Responding to the request of Oban Fitters the Isawa GLD profiles are consistent across weight and flex. Like many shaft companies, some Oban profiles changed in the lighter or heavier weights in the product matrix. This is an attempt by the shaft designers to match shaft profile to the golfer that would be using lighter or heavier models. However, it is difficult for highly skilled professional fitters to work with a shaft that changes “character” with weight. Moving to a heavier or lighter model that has a different profile will produce a completely different flight and feel.

The ISAWA GLD profile is a very popular successful design.

LA  Golf added a new partner recently, Dustin Johnson. He has play the same shaft for many years. He now has one of the top shaft designers that I know, Jeff Meyer, working with him developing and testing profiles made to the highest radial consistencies I see. The new materials allow for unique flag layouts resulting in smoother profiles. I publish smoothed profiles here and in the professional database. But while entering the data I see the raw data profiles. What I see in the DJ Signature Series smoothed curves is not much different than I see in the raw data graphs.
